FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to be in shape to start?
A: No, you do not need to be in shape to start. Even people who are "in shape" in other ways (distance running, strength training, etc) still often struggle with the specific demands of combat sports. Part of our job is to get you in shape. We simply ask that you come as you are, ready to learn, and ready to be consistent.
Q: How long are the classes?
A: Our 101 level classes are approximately one hour long. Intermediate and advanced classes are usually 90 minutes long.
Q: How do I get started?
A: Easy! Take your pick -- Schedule a Free Meet and Greet + Tour with the staff, Enroll in a Trial Membership, or Enroll Directly as a Full Member and receive 2 weeks free! Of course, if you're not sure which option is best for you, reach out to us via e-mail (just hit "reply") or shoot us a text at 215 848 5454. If it's during regular business hours we will get back to you ASAP!
Q: I have no martial arts or fighting experience. Will I be ok?
A: The overwhelming majority of new students have no relevant martial arts background. Our fundamentals programs are designed to teach you everything you need to know and be successful from the ground up!
Q: What equipment do I need?
A: That depends on the class you're attending. For our 101 level Striking classes, you will need gloves, wraps, and shinguards. For our 101 level Jiu Jitsu classes you will need a Jiu Jitsu gi. You can find more information on what type of classes we offer, as well as their experience/equipment requirements, by viewing our Online Schedule.
Students who directly enroll in our Full Membership Options will receive a free Striking or Jiu Jitsu starter kit ($70 value) + 2 weeks free!
Q: Am I too old/young/tall/short/skinny/heavy to participate?
A: Our adult program starts around age 14 and we have active members well into their 60's currently training. As long as training doesn't pose a safety or health risk for you, then you will fit right in, whatever your shape.
Q: Will I be getting hit?
A: There is light contact in our Striking 101 program, with a huge emphasis on safety, etiquette, and form. In Jiu Jitsu, you will be practicing techniques on a partner and vice versa. Both Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu are full contact sports. However, safety is our top priority! In time you will become acclimated to the contact and develop more durability, toughness, and composure under pressure.
Q: Do I need a regular gym membership as well to get in shape?
A: Obviously, this depends. What is "in shape?" If you want to lift heavy weights, you need to lift heavy weights. If you want to run 100 miles, you need to run 100 miles. If you want to learn how to use your body, develop better stability and balance, learn to generate power, and become more flexible and explosive, then you need to do those things. Generally speaking, our training will get you into great shape!
Q: I've never done anything athletic before. Can I still participate?
A: Absolutely. Everyone struggles a bit at first, because so much of what we do here is not taught anywhere else (school, regular gyms, sports teams, etc). Come in with an open mind and an eagerness to work hard and you will do just fine!
Q: I want to compete, how do I get my first fight?
A: We have an active competition team here at the Academy. Generally speaking, we will expect you to fulfill the requirements for passing through our 101 and 201 level programs. Once you are participating in our full contact sparring and rolling sessions, it's simply a matter of consistency and effort. We expect our athletes to train a minimum of five days per week, every week, at the academy. If you exhibit exceptional work ethic and consistency, you will be noticed!
